Diamond Packaging uses both plastics and paper in its consumer packaging products.

Plastic folding carton maker Diamond Packaging is no longer sending any manufacturing waste to landfills.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based company, which also makes paper folding cartons, said it is using recycling and energy recovery to divert manufacturing waste from landfill disposal. The company has a future goal of achieving zero waste-to-landfill for all of its operations.

Diamond Packaging’s zero manufacturing waste efforts include plastics, paper, metal, industrial waste and regulated wastes. But it does not include construction and demolition debris, the company said.

“Zero manufacturing waste to landfill is an important goal and one that demonstrates our leadership in producing more sustainable packaging,” CEO Karla Fichter said in a statement.

Diamond’s two manufacturing facilities reduced waste and increased recycling rates to about 98 percent as part of what it calls its “greenbox initiative” that researches, designs and implements packaging solutions that are innovative and sustainable, the company. The remaining waste is used in fuel blending or sent to an incinerator.

The company does business as Diamond Packaging, although its full corporate name is Diamond Paper Box Co.
